Background & Circumstances
Prabhuji Maya, whose real name is Jayanti Bansode, came to Mumbai in search of work from her village near the Maharashtra - Karnataka border. Somewhere along the way, her circumstances changed and she was left without support, shelter or reliable care. With no one to depend on and limited ability to communicate, she eventually came to be living in a vulnerable condition on the streets. She did not share details about what she went through or how she became separated from a stable life.
The Call for Help
Prabhuji Maya was found sitting on Khandak Road in Gokul Nagar, Bhiwandi, with a wound on her right leg. Local residents had bandaged it, but no one could take responsibility for further care. She appeared confused, was wearing dirty clothes and spoke in a language others could not understand. A concerned resident alerted the Apna Ghar rescue helpline. After police verification, the team took her into protective custody.
The Rescue & Arrival
Prabhuji Maya was brought safely to Apna Ghar Ashram, where Sevasaathis received her with patience and warmth. She was given a bath, gently cleaned and dressed in fresh clothes. Her basic details were recorded and attention was given to her immediate needs. Food and water were served at once and she finished the meal completely, suggesting she had not eaten properly for days. Though she continued speaking in an unfamiliar language, she remained calm and cooperative. She followed instructions and often smiled, expressing quiet trust and visible relief at reaching a safe and caring place.
Settling into Safety
Gradually, Prabhuji Maya adjusted to daily life at the ashram. Sevasaathis helped her maintain hygiene, provided regular meals, medication and adequate rest, while monitoring her injured leg. The steady routine and caring approach created a sense of security. She began sitting with other residents, finding comfort in shared company and simple interactions. Over time, her expressions softened and she appeared more relaxed, showing signs of happiness in an environment where consistent care supported her overall well-being.
The Present Moment
Today, she lives safely within the ashram environment. She spends time playing with a ball and participates in daily routines and festival celebrations, remaining under continuous care and surrounded by compassionate companionship.
