About Us
Sheltering lives with compassion, stability and lifelong respectful care
Who We Are
Apna Ghar Ashram is a humanitarian initiative dedicated to providing shelter, stability and compassionate support to destitute individuals - women who are homeless, abandoned, separated from their families or unable to return safely to their homes. Many of the individuals we serve require ongoing care, supervision and a protected environment where they can live with dignity.
In Mumbai, Apna Ghar Ashram is operated by the Shishu Welfare Trust of India and provides long-term care for Mahila Prabhujis. The Ashram offers a structured and nurturing environment where residents receive safe accommodation, nutritious meals, medical attention and emotional support.
Guided by the belief that every life deserves respect and protection, Apna Ghar Ashram works to restore dignity, stability and a sense of belonging for every Prabhuji who finds a home here.
What We Do
Apna Ghar Ashram provides a safe and stable living environment for destitute individuals who are unable to live independently. Once they enter the Ashram, residents are respectfully referred to as Prabhujis, becoming part of a community founded on dignity, compassion and belonging.
The Ashram supports Mahila Prabhujis by providing a secure setting where their daily needs are met with care and attention. Residents receive regular meals, clean and comfortable living spaces, access to medical support and emotional reassurance through compassionate caregiving.
Life at Apna Ghar Ashram is centred on stability, routine and respect. Our goal is not only to provide shelter, but to create a peaceful environment where every Prabhuji can live without fear, uncertainty or neglect.
How We Work
Apna Ghar Ashram works in coordination with hospitals, police authorities, social workers and concerned citizens to identify individuals who require care and protection. Each person who arrives at the Ashram is received with dignity and compassion and gradually supported in settling into a safe and stable environment.
Care is delivered through a structured and collaborative system. Sevasaathis play a central role in daily life at the Ashram, ensuring that meals, medication, hygiene and rest are managed with consistency and attention. Medical professionals provide regular health oversight, while volunteers support social engagement and companionship.
Clear routines, attentive supervision and careful documentation help maintain safety, stability and well-being for every Prabhuji living at the Ashram.
Our Approach & Operating Model
Apna Ghar Ashram follows a human-centred approach where dignity, safety and compassion guide every decision. Our work is shaped by the principles of Rescue, Rehabilitation and Reintegration, which together form the foundation of how we support individuals who come into our care.
- Rescue reflects our responsibility to respond when individuals are found living in unsafe or neglected conditions, bringing them into a secure and protective environment.
- Rehabilitation represents our commitment to consistent care, patience and emotional support, recognising that stability and recovery require time and trust.
- Reintegration focuses on restoring connection and belonging wherever possible - through family tracing, social inclusion or helping individuals rediscover their sense of identity and dignity.
Our work is guided by empathy, accountability and long-term responsibility, ensuring that every Prabhuji is supported not only as a resident, but as a valued human being.
βWe call our residents - Prabhujis and our caregivers - Sevasaathis to reflect our belief that service to humanity is a service to God.β
